Does anyone have any information about shingle style versus ribbed metal roofing materials?  I hear that the shingle style doesn't have exposed neoprene washers but is more expensive.  Any good/bad experiences with metal roofing?  Thanks.

Tonya:  When we moved to our home on Maple Street, (45 years ago) we had both kinds of  metal roof. Our upper roof was in the sheets, and the front poarch roof was the metal shingles.  We had very much trouble with the metal shingle roof, and were constantly working on it.  The shingles made at that time were always raising enough to let rain blow in under them, and we replaced them first, after about 10 years of working on them every summer.  We finally replace the upper roof  about 10 years later, and at that time ,the city would not allow metal roofs to be replaced with metal, so we went with the asphalt shingles.  I am sure that the metal roof is much superior to what we had back in the 60's, but there are many more surfaces to be dealt with when you have shingles.  Just a thought.

Tonya,

I had my roof re-done with metal. Ray Christian & sons did the work.  It is beautiful and warented for 25yrs. It cost not much more then asphalt shingles and given the fact that barns tend to fall down before thier roofs fall apart, I am pretty sure this roof will outlast me by a longshot.  Comes in great variety of colors these days also. Mr Christian is a Mennonite and he and hsi crew werre timely, cleaned up well,  and there when they said they would be.  It also qualifies for energy fed tax rebate.

a real win win situation.

Do the metal roofs need to be painted very often? (or at all?)

We have a metal shingle roof at 429 West Locust. Made from galvalume( steel bonded with aluminum)--should never need to be painted. Put on by Custom Metal Roofing--very satisfied.they also installed the Solatube Skylights which we love.
