Tree Streets Neighborhood

Johnson City, Tennessee • Southside Neighborhood Organization

I am looking to see if there are some folks interested in getting a CSA share program going in the Tree Streets.

Here's how the share program works.  You pay an upfront fee (or in a few installments) to a farmer.  During the growing season from mid-may until october, every week you get a bag of produce (usually by weight) from what is in season.  It's good for you because you are getting fresh, local, organic produce at a good price.  Its good for the farmer because he or she is guaranteed a market for the produce.  Cost is about $23 dollars a week

There is a CSA program in Gate city (Highland's Bioproduce).  I had a share with them two summers ago and was quite happy.  The only problem is that you have to drive each week to Gate City to pick up the share.

My vision is to establish a group of 10-15 people (or more) in the tree streets interested in getting a share.   One person each week goes to the farm to pick up the shares for all.  The shares are brought back to some tree street destination where all can pick up their share.  The burden of travelling to gate city is shared by all such that each person only had to pick up the shares 2 or 3 times throughout the season.  Or better yet, find someone who works in Kingsport who might be willing to pick up the share on their way home.  That person would, of course, be compensated perhaps by subsidizing their share.

Anyone interested?
