Citizens are invited to a tree giveaway on April 12 at Metro-Kiwanis Park, 817 Guaranda Drive. From 9 a.m. until noon, 3,300 tree seedlings will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. The free trees are part of a campaign to plant 10,000 trees in Johnson City with many varieties offered. A limited number of seedlings will be available per person.
The program began in Spring 2010 and with the conclusion of this giveaway, the City will have distributed 14,400 trees. The program has been such a success that City Manager Pete Peterson has decided not to stop at the original goal of 10,000 but to continue the program into the future.
This is the 14th consecutive year that Johnson City has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
